Sanctuary
Lola ya Bonobo is the only sanctuary in the world for orphaned bonobos, located just outside of Kinshasa, DRC. Bonobos are hunted for bushmeat and babies are often left behind and sold as pets in the Congo and overseas. The Lola staff are committed to the constant care it takes to help bonobos overcome the trauma they experienced in the wild.

Conservation
Those individuals and organizations dedicated to bonobo conservation face many obstacles, all caused by humans. The biggest threat to bonobos at this time is poaching, which feeds the into the bushmeat trade. It is illegal to kill bonobos, but weak enforcement undermines the laws put in place to protect bonobos.

Researchers and scientists study bonobo populations to monitor their populations, distributions and their social interactions, health and habits. Additionally, researchers try to understand the direct and indirect threats that face bonobos and the effectiveness of the interventions executed to protect them.

Zoos
Currently there are seven zoos in the United States with Bonobo exhibits.
Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Fort Worth Zoo, Jacksonville Zoo, Memphis Zoo, Milwaukee Zoo and the San Diego Zoo.
